How to silence unknown callers in WhatsApp
WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called “silence unknown callers” to tackle the issue of spam calls. This feature aims to provide additional protection by automatically screening out spam, scams, and calls from unknown people. The feature has been rolled out globally, with a particular focus on addressing the problem of spam calls in India, where users reportedly receive an average of 17 spam calls per month. In response to the increasing complaints about spam calls, Meta (the parent company of WhatsApp) has introduced this feature to give users more control over their incoming calls.

With the “silence unknown callers” feature, calls from unknown numbers will no longer ring on WhatsApp. Instead, they will be redirected to the user’s call list as missed calls, allowing users to check if any legitimate calls were misidentified as spam. This feature is accompanied by another privacy-focused tool called Privacy Checkup, which guides users through steps to secure their messages, calls, and personal information.
The introduction of this feature follows reports of over 500 million users worldwide experiencing a surge in spam calls, particularly from international numbers. Some of the countries associated with these spam calls include Ethiopia (+251), Malaysia (+60), Indonesia (+62), Kenya (+254), and Vietnam (+84).
While Meta has not yet responded to requests for comment, a WhatsApp spokesperson mentioned that scammers are finding new ways to deceive users, with international scam calls being one of their recent tactics.
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the top five scams reported in 2022 involved online shopping scams, fake business and job opportunities, investment schemes, and offers of prizes, sweepstakes, and lotteries. The FTC received 2.4 million fraud reports in the same year, with Americans losing approximately $8.8 billion to scams—an increase of 30% compared to the previous year.
In light of the escalating spam call issue, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s Minister of State for IT, stated that he plans to send a notice to Meta regarding the significant rise in incoming spam calls. He emphasized the responsibility of platforms like Meta in ensuring the safety, trust, and accountability of digital citizens.
